More than 300,000 people in Michigan were eligible for state government benefits last year, but nearly 1 in 10,000 didn’t get them.
A report released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that 1 in 7 Michigan residents were either unemployed or underemployed in December.
More than one in five residents of Michigan’s rural counties are not in the workforce, according to the report.
In the report, HHS also noted that unemployment benefits for rural residents have dropped by more than one-third since 2011, with nearly 10,700 people receiving unemployment benefits in January.
More people are eligible for Medicaid in Michigan, but that number has dropped significantly since 2014, when it reached 1 in 4 residents, the report found.
