Doha is planning to host a team building exercise on Friday, as it prepares to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in 2022.
Key points:The exercise will take place at a private venue and will be conducted by the United States, Qatar and United Arab Emirates (UAE)As part of the exercise, Qatar will host its first team since 2008, when the 2022 tournament was first awarded to QatarA Qatar Sports Ministry statement said the exercise will be held at a “private” venue and “will be conducted in a friendly atmosphere”.
It is expected to take place from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm (AEST) and will include the Qatari national team.
The announcement came hours after President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani announced that the 2022 FIFA World Cup would be held on the Gulf region’s west coast.
In a statement released late on Friday afternoon, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the event would be the “first in a series of high-profile international events”.
“We are committed to hosting the 2022 World Cup in a secure and safe environment,” he said.
“I urge all parties to exercise utmost caution to ensure the security of their athletes, officials, and fans.”
The 2022 FIFA Confederations Cup is the only major football event held on a permanent basis in the region.
The Qatar 2022 team will be led by head coach, Sheikh Tamimi Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thansi, and his assistant, Abdulrahman Al Tayer Al Thanif.
“This is a first in a number of high profile international events, in addition to the 2022 UAE and Qatar World Cups, to be staged on the Arabian Gulf,” the statement said.
The UAE and Qatar are hosting the FIFA Confederates Cup for the first time in 2022 with the two countries hosting a total of 10 games.
The 2022 World Championship, which has already seen the hosts from the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan take part, will be hosted in Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain.
It is the first major football tournament to be played in the Gulf in more than a decade.
