By STEVE RODGERSBY and STEVE BOULTONAssociated PressNew Orleans coach Dan Campbell resigned Thursday after a five-year, $48 million contract extension was announced, ending a six-year run as the Dolphins’ franchise quarterback.
A source told the Associated Press that Campbell was “in a serious state of mind” and was not expected to return to the Dolphins until after the season.
Campbell was hired by the Dolphins in 2013 as their offensive coordinator.
He guided them to the NFC title game, a wild-card playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers in 2015 and a trip to the AFC Championship Game.
He took the Dolphins to four straight AFC South titles from 2006-13.
Campbills contract is worth $48.5 million over the next five years.
